Saalfelden Leogang has made a name for itself in international cycling with the successful 2012 World Championships and World Cup competitions in recent years. In 2020, Austria's mountain bike Mecca will once again be hosting a major sporting event: In autumn 2020, the medal decision in the downhill discipline will return to the experienced World Cup venue. This was recently announced by the International Cycling Union (UCI) on the sidelines of the Cyclo-Cross World Championships in Bieles, Luxembourg.
"After the 2012 World Championships were a great success, we have been endeavouring to host a major event again for some time. The competition for the award is now fierce," says a delighted Kornel Grundner, Managing Director of Leoganger Bergbahnen: "Being able to host another World Championships after eight years is of course sensational and confirms that we not only organise exciting races and offer a good infrastructure, but also that the entire team works together perfectly. We can also draw on a wealth of experience as organisers and have shown that we are a reliable partner," says Grundner.
Marco Pointner, Managing Director of Saalfelden Leogang Touristik, is also convinced of the appeal of this major event: "The eyes of the international mountain bike scene will once again be on us with the Downhill World Championships. We can once again emphasise our status as a bike destination. With the support of the federal government, state, municipality and landowners, we will now get to work to organise another unforgettable World Championships."
In addition to the 2020 medal decisions, the UCI Downhill World Cup has already been finalised for the next two years. Downhill enthusiasts should therefore mark 11 June 2017 in their calendars now, when the world's elite of the sport will gather at Bikepark Leogang for the seventh time in a row.
