Erik Friedlander’s "The Throw"

USA

Erik Friedlander - cello
Uri Caine - piano
Mark Helias - bass
Ches Smith - drums

Downtown in Saalfelden: Erik Friedlander, son of the legendary (jazz record cover) photographer Lee, is known as a composer, for example for the soundtrack to the dark comedy "Thoroughbreds" or Ken Burns' documentary on Muhammad Ali, and above all as a cellist alongside John Zorn, Courtney Love and Sylvie Courvoisier. With "The Throw", which is also occasionally called "Throw That Glass", the 64-year-old leads an all-star ensemble with pianist Uri Caine, bassist Mark Helias and drummer Ches Smith. It offers "the musicians a structure for improvisation and sets the stage for fireworks," as the text for the album "Artemisia" states. And further: “The band plays with a loose fearlessness that encourages spontaneous eccentricities and moments of synchronicity that were unforeseen, even by its players.”
