Newén means "power" in the Mapudungun language of the indigenous Mapuche people of Chile. Afrobeat is the music of Fela Kuti and drummer Tony Allen, celebrated around the globe. Since 2009, the Chilean band Newen Afrobeat has been mixing this Nigerian super funk with their own roots – even with the aforementioned Tony Allen or with Fela's sons Femi and Seun. Their own songs such as "Cántaros" or "Chaltumay" celebrate the female energy of their ancestors or are a thank you to the Mapuche people - and, above all, offer an overwhelming spectacle of music, dance and social awareness live and in concert.
