When two post-hardcore punks from Washington, DC, a “guitar hero” (The Pick) from Pennsylvania and a Saalfelden-proven jazz saxophonist from Buffalo, NY, get together, even their mess sounds aesthetic. Drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally, who have been playing together in the US capital's underground for thirty years (fifteen of which in the rock band Fugazi), are “Messthetics” together with Anthony Pirog. They just released a new album with young tenor titan James Brandon Lewis for the Impulse label! on which they follow in Coltrane’s footsteps, “from avant-garde jazz to something even more uncompromising,” as guitar.com puts it.
