A winter full of movement in Saalfelden Leogang
Whether Eurovision Sports Winter Games, the Nostalgia Ski World Championships or classics such as the Ski Marathon and 3 Days of Jazz - from January to April, one highlight follows the next in the region.
Skiing down into the valley on wooden skis, drifting along to the sounds of jazz or enjoying a cocktail in the spring sunshine on the mountain top? Saalfelden Leogang has a lot in store over the next three months, including these seven highlights:
On January 3, the 6th Salewa Asitz Skitourrace & Schneeberglauf starts in Leogang. For the participants, an energy-sapping route leads from the Steinbergbahn valley station up to Leogang's local mountain. The 1000-metre elevation gain and four-kilometre route to the Asitz mountain station can be tackled either on touring skis or running shoes. For sprinters, a shortened route (400 meters in altitude and two kilometers) provides the perfect challenge. The race is part of the Pinzgau Trophy and is also held as the Austrian Ski Mountaineering Championships.
Of wooden skis and trumpets...
From January 24 to 26, the wheel of time will be turning in Leogang - the 9th Nostalgia Ski World Championships await. Nostalgia fans from all over the world will get their old lace-up boots and wooden skis out of the cellar to compete in a different kind of race. In the sporting garb of grandparents and great-grandparents, they head down the Steinberg piste and the Schanteilift in the village center towards the valley. Last year, over 290 racers from seven nations competed in retro style.
For the fifth time, there will be “3 Days of Jazz” in Saalfelden Leogang from 17 to 19 January. In contrast to its big sister, the Saalfelden International Jazz Festival, “3 Days of Jazz” is celebrated on a smaller scale - but no less remarkable. At nine concerts, in the Kunsthaus Nexus Saalfelden, in the Mining and Gothic Museum in Leogang and at a free concert on the Stöcklalm on the Asitz, well-known names from the European scene as well as young Austrian formations bring jazz music to the fore. For example, French jazz saxophonist Émile Parisien and Clemens Sainitzer will be performing a cello solo on stage.
...runners and cross-country slats
Nordic flair can once again be felt in Saalfelden on February 9 and 23 when the “Nordic Park Experience” takes place. With a combination of an extensive range of sports, typical culinary delights and a tailored entertainment program, the event offers the perfect ingredients to indulge in the lifestyle of the far north - whether it's biathlon, curling and ice disco or “hyggelig” away from the sports action with a barbecue and chill-out.
The 13th ski marathon in Saalfelden on February 16th is all about racing. In addition to the tried and tested distances of 42 and 21 kilometers, the mini ski marathon for children and schoolchildren is also back on the race calendar the day before this year. The Charity Business Run and the light version of the ski marathon (10.5 kilometers) are new to the competition in 2020.
49th Eurovision Sports Games and White Pearl Mountain Days
From February 14 to 21, it's time for broadcasting staff from all over Europe to get out of the studio and onto the slopes. Saalfelden Leogang is the venue for the 49th Eurovision Sports Games, the winter games of the public broadcasting stations in Europe. The participants compete in the slalom and giant slalom on the Asitz in Leogang, while the cross-country skiing competitions are held on the Ritzensee in Saalfelden.
At the end of the winter, the White Pearl Mountain Days go into full swing once again.
For 17 days, from March 20 to April 5, 32 events in the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn provide the opportunity to celebrate spring skiing in all its glory. After perfect turns in the spring snow, it's time to put your feet up at the High Noon and Sundowner Sessions and enjoy the culinary and musical delights. If you still want to keep your body in shape, you can inhale the alpine lifestyle in the midst of a fantastic mountain backdrop with alpine yoga, snowshoe hiking or cross fit/HIIT.
