New Asitzkogel cable car in Leogang was officially opened

On 18 December 2022, the official opening of the new, ultra-modern 8-seater Asitzkogelbahn lift took place amid great interest and many high-profile guests.

After many years of operation, the 6-seater Sportbahn 2000 was replaced by a new gem for optimum skiing fun with a state-of-the-art 8-seater chairlift with a capacity of 3,700 passengers per hour. In addition, the pistes in the area of the Asitzkogel and Muldenbahn valley stations were also unbundled and widened as part of the new construction.

Managing Director of Leoganger Bergbahnen, Kornel Grundner, is delighted with the quality improvement in the Asitzmulde and explains: ‘After a lengthy planning phase, all winter sports enthusiasts can look forward not only to a modern, fast lift, but also to an even wider and more comfortable piste in the valley station area. The station buildings also include a high-quality lounge with coffee and drinks machines, lockers and toilets.’

Sustainability also played an important role in the planning of the new Asitzkogel lift. The façade of the valley station was equipped with a photovoltaic system measuring around 100 square metres. This provides green solar power for the underfloor heating in the service rooms, WC facilities and the beautiful panorama lounge. A particularly efficient and energy-saving direct drive was chosen for the drive. The savings amount to around 62,000 KW/h per year. Truly sustainable: the old 6-seater Sportbahn 2000 is now in operation in the Polish ski resort of Master-Ski Tylicz. After 20 years of good service in the Skicircus, the lift has been given a second life in the service of winter sports!

The design of the new chairlift from Doppelmayr, with its comfortable seats and protective covers, is also very high quality, while the station buildings are architecturally appealing and adapted to the natural surroundings. Façade elements were designed in the form of gabions made from the excavated material. The modern lounge with a fantastic view in the valley station building is open to the public and invites you to linger and warm up.

The Asitzkogelbahn was blessed by Deacon Dr Ludwig Spörr and the ceremony was rounded off with speeches by Governor Dr Wilfried Haslauer, Managing Director Kornel Grundner, Supervisory Board Dir. Johann Riedlsperger, Mayor Josef Grießner and Chairman of the Austrian Cable Car Industry Association Franz Hörl.

Governor Dr Wilfried Haslauer was also impressed by the new facility: ‘With investments like this, the Salzburg cable car and lift industry ensures a high level of comfort, safety and short waiting times for locals and guests. Together with tourism, it is the most heavily invested sector in Salzburg's economy - with numerous added value effects for many other areas. I am also particularly pleased with the focus on sustainability and the circular economy in the construction of the new Asitzkogel lift.
