The Leogang exhibition mine is open again

A view ‘underground’ in Saalfelden Leogang

From July to October, mining in Saalfelden Leogang is brought back to life. In the footsteps of the miners, visitors can immerse themselves in the past of the mining industry in the natural jewel of the Schwarzleotal valley. Guided tours of the medieval tunnels of the show mine provide an insight into the hard work of the miners and the treasures they extracted from silver, copper, nickel and other minerals.

As early as the 14th century, a system of hand-cut tunnels in the Schwarzleograben in Saalfelden Leogang led miners to their work underground. Since 1989, part of the area has been accessible as a show mine, offering an insight into the history of one of the oldest mining operations in the country during the summer months. Well-trained guides take visitors on a walk through an extensive mine workings. The adventurous journey through narrow tunnels takes you directly into the past, sometimes bent over and sometimes in single file, and provides an insight into the hard work of the miners who extracted silver, copper, nickel, lead, cobalt and mercury here. After 3200 years of mining history, the accompanying miners' parlour invites you to linger. Guests are spoilt by the new tenant, Sylvia Gruber, with local cuisine.

New from summer 2020: In the coming weeks, work will continue on the brand new playground, which offers numerous experiences for the little miners. An additional highlight is an old railway, which has now been put back into operation. In the past, this was used to transport the mined treasures and to transport the miners. The railway will soon be transporting the youngest visitors through a new man-made tunnel right next to the miners' parlour.
