Hermitage in Saalfelden Leogang
Who is looking at the Steinerne Meer will discover a little white chapel above Schloss Lichtenstein. This is the hermitage of Saalfelden, which is one of the last occupied hermitage in Europe and is located here since the 17th century. Locals and guests alike visit the hermitage regularly because of the beautiful hike that leads you there, the breathtaking view over Saalfelden, the inspiring conversations with the hermit and the special energy, which can be experienced up there.
The Hermitage can be reached in a number of different ways: from the Bachwinkl district of Saalfelden, which also marks the starting point of the trail to the Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte mountain hut, and from Bürgerau (via the Fuchssteig trail, which requires surefootedness), another district of Saalfelden located next to the Steinernes Meer plateau. In the vicinity of the Hermitage you will also find the Kühloch, a natural cave that was used in the Bronze Age. Many people come to talk to the hermit and tell him of the things that are weighing on their mind.
