The Steinberge Challenge: Climbing, Biking and Enjoyment
Around 70 kilometers by e-bike, four via ferratas, alpine hikes, rafting and an overnight stay in a hut in the middle of the Steinberge mountains. All this within eight days. These are the rough key data of the Steinberge Challenge.
The idea
The three tourism organizations Salzburger Saalachtal, Pillerseetal Kitzbüheler Alpen and Saalfelden Leogang came up with the whole thing. Together, they form the Steinberge mountain sports region: summarized the climbing offer of the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge. Around these mountain massifs already leads the Steinbergrunde popular with bikers. This time, the idea was to combine the theme of biking with climbing and the different but characteristic offers of the respective regions. The result is a mix that is challenging, but at least as much fun.
The preparations
The preparations were completed and everything was ready for the arrival of our four Challengers in June 2021. For a good start of the challenge, climbing skills were refreshed at the beginning. In the climbing hall Felsenfest in Saalfelden our crew tried out the different belay devices with mountain guide Markus. Furthermore, the basic rules of climbing were refreshed (partner check!) and the self-securing system was extensively tested. In addition, they received some helpful tips for the next few days. That way one gets through every via ferrata. Another important point before the start of the challenge was the familiarization with the means of transportation for the next 7 days: the e-bike. We clarified the question: Where and how do I use the power of an e-bike? In addition, technical exercises and the first ride were also included. And the next day Annika, Thomas, Janik and Björn took off!
